Mental Health and Chronic Disease: I See You
Living with chronic illness takes a mental toll. A heartfelt reminder to destigmatize mental health and ask for help.
Mental health has long carried stigma. Thankfully, our world has grown more unified in raising awareness for those living with mental health challenges.
People with chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, arthritis, and autoimmune conditions like lupus and rheumatoid arthritis must face their mental health alongside their physical illness. They may struggle with depression, anxiety, and even suicidal thoughts because of chronic pain, medication side effects, physical disability, and a lack of social connection or intimacy.
Mental health disorders can be associated with many autoimmune diseases, including lupus, Sjögren's syndrome, and vasculitis. Addressing the mind and the body together is part of good care.
To everyone struggling with mental illness or afraid to speak up: I see you. You are not invisible. Seek help and support, and do not be afraid to ask for it.
We must keep working to destigmatize mental health in all communities, especially among those living with chronic disease. You do not have to carry it alone.
